Wyatt Wustrau: Trafalgar candidate

Don't Forget To Be Awesome!

Meet Wyatt Wustrau, a PBIAS student at Trafalgar Campus! An adventurous leader who is passionate about promoting Environment and Sustainability!

  • Trying my best to help those around that have a hard time

  • The changes to funding, and changes to OSAP.

  • Improve the biking culture, get a bike hub at Trafalgar campus!

What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?

Why is Environment and sustainability the area you are most passionate about?

We do not have much advocating for the environment and sustainability currently. Our current situation with the environmental department is that they have 2 people in it. That is not enough for all of the struggles and issues we will continue to face going forward. We need to care for the environment, and we need to start doing more to create a healthier environment for ourselves as students and for the people that will be coming after us in the future.

We have a duty to the lands that we have found ourselves on, to make them better than we found them. To make them healthier than they were without us, because they give us so much. We tend to take them for granted and that is a shame that we can fix together.

We need to focus more on cycling infrastructure, on getting people involved in what it means to be "sustainable". There are 17 sustainable development goals that the United Nations believe we should hit by 2030. I know that we can hit those if we have a focus on them, and I want to bring a focus to the SSU for that.

We have to focus more on getting students to take public transport, and to advocate for those services to get better. We need to focus on cycling as a means of infrastructure and keeping those lanes open for the students and the faculty at school. (Currently our racks to keep bikes locked up are filled with snow at Trafalgar, as someone that has biked in the winter, it would be nice not to have to trek through the snow to get to my bike.)

We also need to make sure that being sustainable starts with what it is the individuals are doing daily. If they are able to keep a sustainable style through school (making sure they aren't to stressed, or get good food, create connections, and can help focus on the environment going forward) then they will be able to bring that with them into the rest of there lives, and that will create an environment where they are able to help improve our impact on the world.

Thank you for your time and consideration when it comes to these issues.

I appreciate your time, and hope you have a great day.

“I want to make a mark on campus by increasing sustainable practices.”

  • I have helped start tea club and have found that there is not that much of a sustainability focus through our school anymore. We used to have a larger focus on sustainability and on making an environment that was healthier for all of us. I want to continue on that work through helping the board and the SSU realign itself to be more sustainability focused.

After starting tea club, we got involved with the community gardens on the Trafalgar campus, and learned more about sustainability efforts that are going on. We learned that there wasn't much around campus being done for sustainability. There are currently popup-shops for donated items, but those are only a few times a semester. At other campuses, there is a bike hub that helps to get students engaged when it comes to cycling to campus by providing assistance and help when it comes to there bike, and when it comes to all things cycling. This is something we need at Trafalgar campus also and something I want to help bring to Trafalgar campus.

  • Teaching students how to be more sustainable in their lives. From not overworking or studying themselves, to their impacts on the community around them, to the impacts on the work they will do in the future.

As a reminder, you will need to vote for campus-specific representatives, but all Board discussions are passed when every Board member is involved. Take a look at all of your campus representatives, stop by their campaign booths, and make an informed decision on March 16 - March 20.
