How To Successfully Complete SSU Nominations
5 wAYS TO make your Nomination stand out
If you’re thinking about joining the SSU Board of Directors this year, we wanted to share a few key ways to make sure your application meets the guidelines and stands out from the crowd. Here are five ways to prepare for nominations to help you get ready for elections and make your mark on campus.
1. Your Headshot Image
This image will be used on the posters, website during your campaign week. Here are some tips:
Stand near a clean wall or background
Have good lighting so we can see your face clearly
Look straight ahead - avoid sending in a headshot image with your head turned
Wear something without any logos or brands
2. read the important docs
These documents are very important, make sure you read them and understand.
Elections Policy and Nominations Package include important dates you don’t want to miss, important by-laws and behaviours you have to follow when you decide to run in the SSU election. Be sure to read through the documents throughly and if you have any questions about something you read, contact your CRO! They’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you have - and having a clear understanding of those by-laws and packages, will help you run in an election without any confusion or issues.
3. Tell Us About Yourself
Show your personality, passion and motivation for joining the SSU Board.
The more students know about the things you are passionate about, the committees, clubs or associations you are apart of and the impact you hope to make at Sheridan, the more likely they will be to vote for you. This section is your first introduction to the Sheridan community! Make it a great first impression by:
Sharing your program, your involvement at Sheridan and outside of Sheridan
Tell us why you decided to run for a seat on the SSU Board
Make it full, but also make it concise.
4. get to know ssu pillars
These Pillars help guide the decisions made by the SSU Board of Directors.
The SSU Board of Directors play an important role in student success. If you become a Director on the Board, you will focus your attention and efforts on three main Pillars of Success:
1. Enhancing the Well-Being of Sheridan Students
2. Supporting an Environment that promotes a view of the whole student experience
3. Supporting Access and Accountability to Quality Education
During the elections process, you will use these pillars to strengthen your platform.
5. Think about your platform
This question: “Write about one of the current student issues you selected above. Please share why advocating for this issue is important to you”
On the nominations form, you will be asked to select student issues that you hope to address as a Board member (and there is an option to add something new as well). Take the time to think about your experience as a student at Sheridan. Where are the gaps that you want to help fill? How would you like to make your mark on campus?
This section in the nomination form will be used on the SSU elections profile to explain your campaign platform. Before you write about here are important things to know:
Do you have a clear understanding of how the SSU can support students? It’s important to avoid making promises you cannot guarantee and instead share which student issues you want to address on the Board.
Hopefully, these tips help you while filling out your nomination form. If you have any questions, don’t forget to email us at ssui.cro@sheridancollege.ca
