Adrien Daranciang: Trafalgar candidate

"Nothing's unstoppable except for me when I'm stopping you from telling me something's unstoppable." - Po, Kung Fu Panda 2

Meet Adrien Darancing, a Film Program Student at Trafalgar Campus! An approachable leader who is passionate about promoting Health and Wellness across all campuses!

  • The energy already existing in the community, just needing organization

  • Students at all Sheridan campuses and the province as a whole are currently dealing with the recent OSAP cuts in Ontario. I want to make sure all students that need scholarships, bursaries, and awards have access to them in lieu of the financial aid from OSAP that many people relied on. Domestic and international students alike deal with financial barriers to education and the stress of already high tuition must be compensated for above all else to ensure people can afford and continue education.

  • A pressing issue I would like to address is the lack of access to safe off-campus housing resources for places around the Trafalgar campus. Illegal and unethical housing is a large source of stress for students and safe, monitored housing forums and connection methods between students are so important. I am continuously horrified by the stories I hear from other students about their living situations and it's very unfortunate that people pick between being safe and being able to afford housing. I think that a lot can be done to help students access said housing, even by just helping students connect better with one another.

What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?

Why Is Student housing resources the area you are MOST passionate about?

Ever since I started going to Sheridan, I've realized that the lack of student housing resources is one of the biggest issues for students on campus. As not all students are able to live on residence or with their parents, a good portion of students have to find and sign leases on housing on their own. Many of these basements, apartments, and bedrooms have unethical or illegal terms and are sometimes outright dangerous. I have dealt with and have heard stories of mould, infestations, intrusive landlords, and illegal rent raises, to name a few. I believe that it's imperative that students have access to safe and ethical housing. Currently, places4students, the one school endorsed board for finding housing, is full of listings that are illegal or unethical, and the other sites people often check like Facebook Marketplace, Roomies, or Kijiji can all be unreliable and full of scams. If there were ways for students to more easily communicate *with each other* in looking for roommates and housing and for reviewing housing outside of campus, we could better keep each other safe. There is currently no way to officially warn against or prevent other students from staying in unethical and unsafe places without fully taking legal action against their landlords, an option many students are hesitant to take. I think that there should be some official forum to communicate with each other about housing. I also think that students need to be necessarily made aware of their housing rights, including the rules that landlords can and cannot put in place, the amount that rent can be raised every year, and what they can do if rules are broken. I know that the lawyer that deals with housing issues can be found under legal advice on the SSU website, but students should be aware of their rights before something actively goes wrong. Also, many students are not aware of their access to legal advice and action in the first place, so this information should be widely spread.

Having safe and secure housing is such an important part of students' physical and mental health. Students need to have easy access to available housing and potential roommates, be comfortable in knowing that the housing they see is going to be safe and ethical, and know their rights from the get go. The SSU is a big part of students' understanding of and access to student services, and I want to advocate on the board for services that benefit students in their housing searches and living situations.

“ I want to make a mark on campus by connecting students with one another.”

  • I am currently studying in the Bachelor of Film and Television program at the Trafalgar campus and graduated from the Art Fundamentals program in 2024. I have made the most of time at Sheridan and with the community here as one of the founders and former president of the Trafalgar Chess Club and an active member of the Improv Club and the Playback Club. I attend SSU and SSU club events regularly to spend time with the community where I can. I have friends across most of the programs at my campus and have learned a lot about people's interests and concerns here, including the representation of the different cultures of the student populations, the availability of resources for mental and physical health, and the promotion of students' art and creations around campus. I care a lot about student livelihoods in terms of housing and food and have organized second-hand buying and selling and mutual aid in smaller groups on campus and would love to continue helping in these material ways on a larger scale. I love how social this campus is and how welcomed I've felt while attending school here and I would love to represent the community's interests through the SSU board.

  • One of the most valuable benefits of a student union is its ability to connect students with one another. Material resources of the SSU aside, students have so much to give to one another when organized properly. An SSU-monitored forum for students to communicate about and review housing could be so beneficial to students. Places4students has listings, but students can't communicate easily with one another meaning unsafe listings stay up without former residents being able to warn others about them. I also think that community events like Zine Zone are so helpful for artists and creatives but resources for selling throughout the year could really help artists make more consistent profit and take advantage of our campus which is known for art. More frequent markets for selling art or even just an online forum for advertising art would be a great way to support artists on campus.

As a reminder, you will need to vote for campus-specific representatives, but all Board discussions are passed when every Board member is involved. Take a look at all of your campus representatives, stop by their campaign booths, and make an informed decision on March 16 - March 20.
