NAVDEEP KAUR: HMC candidate

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are!

Meet Navdeep Kaur, an Architecture Technology Program Student at HMC Campus! A dynamic leader passionate about promoting Financial Support: Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards across all campuses!

  • I always say rivers are one of my main inspirations. Always moving, refreshing, finding new paths and connecting everything in their way. In short, it inspires me to be a leader who flows with ideas, overcomes challenges, brings people together, inspires others, and navigates challenges while staying open and accessible to everyone.

  • One of the most pressing issues students across all campuses and in Ontario are facing right now is changes to OSAP and how it impacts affordability and student debt. Students were already struggling with affordability issues like rent, living costs, food prices, and now this OSAP change adds another layer of stress and pressure. So considering current situation if elected I would like to address this issue.

  • After talking to students, this is what I’ve heard: First, feeling isolated as peers attend classes and then leave quickly, leading to loneliness and difficulty forming friendships. Second, more scholarship options (transparent and clear). Third, due to program uncertainty and changes, such as the suspension of some programs, students are worried about their future and careers. If elected i will ensure students feel supported: academically, socially and emotionally; making sure everyone not just survive but can enjoy and live their student life.

What are some of the student issues that you would like to bring to the Board table?

Why is Financial Support the area you are most Passionate about?

I believe financial stability plays a critical role in a student’s ability to succeed both academically and personally. Many students are required to balance tuition fees, living expenses, work commitments, and academic responsibilities.
While trying to manage all of these demands, students often experience high levels of stress and pressure, limiting not only their ability to engage effectively in campus life, extracurricular activities, and academic opportunities but also seriously affecting their mental health and physical well-being.

As a result, some students fail courses or are forced to take breaks from their education. In more severe cases, students drop out entirely without completing their studies. These outcomes can have long-term negative effects on their careers and confidence, while also sending the wrong message that higher education is only accessible to those with financial privilege.

No student should feel discouraged or forced to abandon their goals due to financial challenges beyond their control. Financial support, such as bursaries and awards, plays a crucial role in reducing these barriers that students face while trying to balance multiple responsibilities.

By providing financial assistance to students, they can focus more on their studies, skill development, and personal growth without being constantly weighed down by financial stress. This support can make a meaningful difference in a student’s academic performance, overall well-being, and sense of belonging within the institution. Beyond financial relief, bursaries and awards also serve as a powerful form of recognition and motivation. When students see that their hard work, dedication, and achievements are acknowledged, it reinforces their confidence and encourages them to continue striving for excellence. This recognition inspires students to remain committed to their education, pursue leadership opportunities, and contribute positively to their campus community. Advocating for financial support is one of the most important responsibilities a student leader can take on. Education should never be limited by financial constraints, and every student deserves an equal opportunity to succeed academically, socially, and personally. By promoting and supporting bursaries and awards, student leaders help foster a more inclusive and supportive learning environment—one where students feel valued and motivated to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.

“I want to make an impact on campus by making sure every voice is heard”

  • I am enrolled in the Architecture Technology program, completing my second co-op, with plans to start Semester 4 in May 2026.
I've developed strong technical skills and gained hands-on experience connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. Sheridan’s focus on applied education has supported my growth, encouraging creativity and active learning.
I also served on the HMC Board of Directors for 2025–2026, advocating for students and participating in decision-making, finance, hiring, and strategic planning, thereby enhancing my leadership and decision-making skills. Sheridan’s diverse community and supportive faculty motivate me to take initiative and stay engaged. I am a peer mentor, learning teamwork, communication, and empathy. As a student, mentor, and leader, I aim to contribute positively to Sheridan while growing academically and professionally.

  • Well-being of the student and engagement. With an increase in academic pressure, financial stress, and meaningful community connections, we need to ensure students are not only represented but also supported, included, and empowered.

As a reminder, you will need to vote for campus specific representatives, but all Board discussions are passed when every Board member is involved. Take look at all of your campus reps, stop by their campaign booths and make an informed decision on March 16 - March 20.
